			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>You may have heard the same news report that I heard.</strong></p>
<p> <strong>Average life expectancy is falling in many parts of the United States and for many demographic groups</strong>, most notably women, according to <a href="http://www.pophealthmetrics.com/content/pdf/1478-7954-9-16.pdf">a study that was published Wednesday (June 15, 2011)</a> in the journal <em>Population Health Metrics</em>, and conducted by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington in Seattle.</p>
<p> In the study, Dr. Ali Mokdad, an IHME official who is researching causal factors affecting life expectancy, listed four reasons for the trends found in the report:</p>
<ol>
<li> Poverty and lack of education</li>
<li>Access to health care</li>
<li>Quality of medical care</li>
<li>Preventable risk factors like:  obesity, untreated high blood pressure and smoking.</li>
</ol>
<p> The enormous increase in obesity, which has doubled in the past 30 years, from 17 percent to 34 percent of the population (<em>editor’s note:  the real number is hovering around 80%</em>) may be the most alarming. He points out that obesity is linked to: low incomes, education levels, lack of access to healthy food choices, particularly fresh fruit and vegetables and the dominance of fast food (<em>editor’s note:  and packaged, processed and convenience food</em>).</p>
<p> <strong>What could you take away from this report?</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>There is a conspiracy between Big Pharma and Big Health Care to keep their profits high – at our expense – and Doctors are in on it?</li>
<li>The Teacher’s Unions have a socialist agenda to dumb down the population on matters of nutrition?</li>
<li>The US Congress is conspiring to “kill off” segments of the population to reduce the budget?</li>
<li>Big Food rents Super Market shelf space, builds fast food restaurants and convenience stores to sell packaged food to make a profit?</li>
</ol>
<p> <strong>Who will get the blame &#8211; this time?</strong></p>
<p> <strong>Here’s another perspective.</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Commercialized farms and ranches grow and sell food commodities that are measured by quantity, price and appearance</li>
<li>Their largest customers are not consumers, they are food manufacturers</li>
</ol>
<p> <strong>Food manufacturers make their products to:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Appeal to customers with advertising, packaging and price</li>
<li>Create repeat business with taste and convenience</li>
<li>Stay on the shelf as long as possible to protect their investment in inventory</li>
</ol>
<p> There is a marketing term, “<strong>Give the Gorilla a Banana</strong>”, that means sell what people want to buy.   Commercial farms and ranches are growing and food manufacturers are making what you are buying; therefore,  … .</p>
<p><strong> Frankly, I believe the statistics – I choose not to be one, and you can too. </strong></p>
<p> We speak with our checkbook.  We buy the best real food we can find, prepare and eat it; then, we fill in the gaps with supplements.  We’re in our mid 60’s, close to our healthy weight, without prescriptions and active.</p>

<p> <strong>Changing subjects: </strong></p>
<p>we have been clarifying our view of natural healing.  In particular, we have been investigating the work of an early microbiologist, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoine_B%c3%a9champ">Antoine Bechamp</a> and a scientist, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Bernard">Claude Bernard.</a>   The two theories:  Pleomorphism and Internal Melieu are intriguing. </p>
<p> Considering both men were working at the turn of the century, their work is admirable.</p>
<p> <strong>Our penchant to address “symptoms” declining health, either medically or naturally, might be all wrong.</strong></p>
<p> According to Bechamp and Bernard, a decline in the life force of the body may be the source of the problem.Sounds pretty new age, doesn’t it?  But, if you think about it, the name, life force, that describes the intricate interplay between the various functions of the body, is spot on. </p>
<p> The complimentary theories of the two scientists, describe the possibility that the internal environment is the foundation for the efficient function of body.  Furthermore, changes in the internal environment will set off a cascade of dysfunctional events that lead to declining health and, ultimately, death.</p>
<p> <strong>This approach suggests </strong>that, rather than focusing on particular symptoms of degenerating health, the first effort should be directed at returning the internal environment of the body to the state that supports efficient function.</p>
<p> Heady stuff!</p>
<p><strong> The long and short of it is</strong>: our diet of processed, preserved, packaged, convenience food, replete with all the various additives, is throwing the body’s internal environment out of whack.  In turn, <a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/caringforyourbody.asp">normal functions</a>, due to the out of balance condition, fall into dysfunction.</p>
<p> Next, the approach leads on to suggest that until the <strong>internal environment is restored, the various dysfunctions will continue</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Does this approach apply in all circumstances?  Certainly not</strong>.  What it points to is the importance of maintaining the general well-being of the body through diet, exercise and rest.  And, if for some reason, you can&#8217;t provide your body all of the nutrition it requires to maintain itself, dietary supplements can fill the gap on two levels:  restoring internal balance and rebuilding dysfunction(s).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Judging by the comments concerning the weight loss articles, many of you are clinging to the misconception that there is one simple way to lose weight.</p>
<ul>
<li> There are theories espousing the merits of dieting that range from starvation to consumption of mostly carbohydrates, mostly protein and mostly water.</li>
<li> There are theories extolling the merits of exercise from gym enthusiasts, yoga, and other instructors.</li>
<li> Others, who adamantly believe they have found a secret potion, lotion or twig, extoling the anecdotal benefits of their remedy for obesity.</li>
</ul>
<p> At this point, you must know our Company formulates and sells dietary supplements.  So, bear that in mind as you read on.</p>
<p> <strong>To help clear up matters, there isn’t one simple way to lose weight </strong>(or to become healthy).  Each person is different &#8211; with diverse lifestyles, diet and heritage so results may vary.  But, there is a commonality the runs through all of us.</p>
<p><strong>Humans are not the fastest or strongest creatures on the planet &#8211; we </strong><strong>are among the most successful species on earth because our ancestors were farmers and ranchers.</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Early on, living by harvesting wild plants and animals and, later on, harvesting domesticated versions of the same.</li>
<li> There was, amonst our ancestors, a minimum level of exercise required to keep thier bodies fit.  It involved walking to find food, stooping to pick it up, light lifting to make their environment habitable.</li>
<li> Our ancestors were experts at recognizing a pending danger from one of the stronger, faster other creatures and taking an appropriate action by choosing to fight or run. </li>
</ul>
<p> On one hand, those who didn’t, or couldn’t, follow this regime are not our ancestors because they didn’t survive.   On the other hand, thanks to the survivors who are our ancestors, <strong>we are blessed bodies that are adaptable, resilient and forgiving bodies</strong>.</p>
<p><strong> This brief review of the past 5000+ years of history is particularly helpful when applied to the context of the last 100 years. </strong></p>
<p>Today, we have automobiles, supermarkets, homes that are automatically heated and cooled and jobs with challenges that are often threatening. </p>
<p><strong> The adaptability of the human body is being tested by this explosion of creature comforts and stress.</strong>  They are creating disparity between what the body expects and what it is getting that, if left unfilled, produce the predictable outcome we are experiencing:  obesity and declining health.</p>
<p> One would think that we could overcome 5000+ years of adaptation in short order with all the technology at our disposal, but we haven’t – so far.</p>
<p> Researchers are predicting that this generation of children will be the first that have a shorter life-span and experience more health challenges than any other generation in modern times.</p>
<p>And, judging from the ever-expanding use of healthcare services, our generation isn’t doing so well, either.</p>
<p> Personally, I think it is <strong>this misconception that technology will win the day that is to blame</strong>.  This paradigm lulls us into relying on something or someone to undo the harm we cause to ourselves.</p>
<p><strong> Resilience is another characteristics that our ancestors passed on is resilience</strong>.  It allows for the body to bounce back to balance if and when it expectations have been met.</p>
<p><strong> Herein lies the your opportunity.  You can change the way things are by changing the things you do.</strong></p>
<p>Our ancestors:</p>
<ul>
<li>experienced moderate exercise, waking, stooping and light lifting. </li>
<li>They consumed whole, fresh food.</li>
<li>They dealt with threats, in a civil fashion, and then forgot about them. </li>
</ul>
<p>Do that!</p>
<p> Admittedly, there will be gaps, particularly in your diet.</p>
<p>Fill those gaps with well-rounded quality supplements that will cost less than a quicky, fast-food meal or a designer cup of coffee.</p>
<p> <strong>A forgiving body is the final characteristic we inherited from our ancestors which offers all of us hope.</strong></p>

<p><strong>You have the power.</strong></p>

<li>The power over your checkbook.  Stop purchasing foods that you know aren’t wholesome.</li>
<li>The power over how you spend your time.  Use it wisely in your work, with your family, for moderate exercise and rest.</li>
<li>The power over the stress that you allow in your life.  Deal with it the forget it.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Losing weight is the #1 priority on most people’s list, and rightly so.</p>
<p> The reason for its high rating is simple to understand if you will pause, during your next trip to the mall, to see what excess weight is doing to people.</p>
<p> Recently, I had occasion to travel by air.  The trip involved three airports for both ends of the trip with, of course, layovers.   That was an eye-opener, too! </p>
<p>There were 4 obvious groups of people:</p>
<ol>
<li>Twenty somethings</li>
<li>Thirty somethings</li>
<li>Forty somethings</li>
<li>Fifty plus somethings.</li>
</ol>
<p> The difference in appearance was, for lack of a better word, astounding.  And, the obvious change, during the transition between demographics was … well, mind-boggling.</p>
<p> While waiting for each next plane, my observations were:</p>
<p><strong> 1.  The twenty somethings were, for the most part, thin, energetic and they appeared to be healthy.</strong></p>
<p>They were constantly skipping between their “mobile devices” and laptops.  The excitement of their first job, the anticipation of the experiences of travel, new places, new people and few, if any responsibilities at home was obvious. </p>
<p>To summarize, it appeared to be a low stress – high expectation experience for them.</p>
<p><strong> 2.  The thirty somethings were beginning to show a little wear.</strong></p>
<p>They were sporting a few extra pounds, had less bounce in each step and they appeared less healthy. </p>
<p>The men’s hair and skin pallor had less radiance.  The women wore more makeup so, thanks to personal care products, it wasn’t as apparent. </p>
<p>Their use of  “mobile devices” and laptops was more deliberate with what appeared to be longer, less animated conversations and sessions on their mobile devices and laptop.</p>
<p>The responsibilities, and demands, of their job, the past experiences of travel; places, people and the responsibilities at home, like: spouses, young children and a mortgage was obvious.</p>
<p>To summarize, stress was taking its toll on them.</p>
<p><strong> 3.  The forty somethings looked unhealthy.</strong></p>
<p>They were, for the most part, clinically obese.  Men and women alike were overhanging their belts or covering their bodies with loose fitting clothes.</p>
<p>Without trying to be unkind, it was obvious that they were attempting to reverse the trend that they witnessed in the mirror, everyday, with attire and overdone makeup.</p>
<p>The demands, and stress, of their corporate career are all too familiar.  Thick files extracted from a briefcase, reviewing reports on the laptop, putting out fires on the cell, preparing for a meeting that your boss or your people are “depending on you to pull off”, petulant teenagers, an understanding and overworked spouse, too many restaurant meals, too many bad airport meals, hotel rooms … .  Ick!  But, I digress.</p>
<p>To summarize, the stress, while mostly managed, is monumental.  It’s no wonder that they were diving into their briefcase for antacids, some sort of over-the-counter medication or their prescription because, the past abuses to their bodies is beginning to catch up with them.</p>
<p><strong>4.   The fifty plus somethings broke into 2 groups:  those sitting in 1st class and those sitting where I sat.</strong></p>
<p>Those sitting in 1st class were either incredibly lucky or they have more time, and money, to pay attention to their health &#8230; because the people who joined me appeared to be not healthy.</p>
<p>The people sitting with me, for the most part, looked like the time they spent neglecting their health had caught up with them.  I seem to remember reading that the average 60-year-old person is taking 6 prescriptions to manage the symptoms of their degenerating conditions of health. </p>
<p>To summarize, it wasn’t that pretty!</p>
<p><strong> You’re probably asking yourself:  “What does this has to do with being overweight or obese?”</strong></p>
<p> The situation started back when you were a late twenty something &#8211; when you thought you could continue to eat like a teenager &#8211; when you first encountered the rigors of living a life of responsibilities.</p>
<p><strong>It happened when those 2 to 5 pounds you gained during the holidays and winter, didn’t “just go away.”</strong> </p>
<p>You may have tried something that was quick and easy.   But now, sure enough, you find yourself carrying around several years worth of … well, you know &#8230; those pounds that didn&#8217;t go away.</p>
<p><strong> Losing weight is likely the most promised, and subsequently broken, New Year’s resolution in the world. </strong></p>
<p>As previously written, <a href="http://www.americanutra.com/trying-to-lose-weight-in-january-is-a-fool%e2%80%99s-mission/">trying to lose weight during winter is a fool’s mission</a>.  Adding to this unavoidable fact, unrealistic expectations from: starvation diets, expensive, time consuming workouts at the gym or “fast-acting diet pills” will soon have you right back where you were – only, you&#8217;ll be lighter in your wallet and disappointed.</p>
<p> <strong>The good news is:  spring is just around the corner and, that’s when you should start your weight loss program.</strong></p>
<p> I believe the most effective way to burn fat is to restore metabolism while you’re awake and during sleep.  (That’s how you burned away the pounds when you were 20 something). </p>

<p>For years, people have been asking for a book that they can refer to for help with maintaining their health.  Frankly, putting the information into a manageable form, that would work as a reference, is a daunting task.</p>
<p><strong>The first hurdle is to recognize the strongly held &#8220;rules&#8221;</strong> from which people make their decisions regarding their health.</p>
<p><strong>The four most commonly held paradigms are</strong>:</p>
<ul>
<li>Supermarkets sell food.</li>
<li>Physicians can fix any and all health complaints.</li>
<li>Pharmaceutical Companies have miracle cures or are very near a breakthrough on others.</li>
<li>There is a mystical potion, lotion or twig that can save them &#8211; once rules 2 and 3 fail.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>The second hurdle is to overcome the false confidence on matters of their health</strong> into which people have been lulled.</p>
<p>After being immersed in the effort of promoting and maintaining health for nearly two decades, I can tell you that <strong>all of these commonly held beliefs are wrong</strong>.</p>
<ul>
<li>Supermarkets sell products &#8211; bags, cans and packages of goods for a market segment  (produce and fresh meats excluded)</li>
<li>Physicians vaccinate, prescribe meds for bacterial infections, react to  emergencies and injuries and manage symptoms.</li>
<li>There are no miracles &#8211; prescriptive or natural</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>The third hurdle is to convince people that they must take a proactive role</strong> using good judgement, diet, lifestyle and the judicious use of supplements if they intend to live their lives in the fullness of health.</p>
<p>For the average person, finding the time to examine these false paradigms is a victory.  Finding the courage to discard them and implement self-care is another. </p>
<p><strong>Self-care, after all, is taking responsibility for your own well-being</strong>.  The concept congers up all sorts of fear about everything they do not know about their health and the perceived risks associated with managing their most valuable asset &#8211; their health.</p>
<p>People are apprehensive because they fear going it alone.  They are, for the most part, unfamiliar with the myriad of resources to assist them.  The most basic of resources are:</p>
<ul>
<li>Health Insurance Company &#8211; wellness as well as coverages</li>
<li>Nutritionist &#8211; Diet and preparation of food</li>
<li>Chiropractor &#8211; Skeletal system</li>
<li>Massage Therapist &#8211; Muscle and connective tissue</li>
<li>Universities &#8211; Current research from their various departments</li>
<li>Pharmacist &#8211; Medications:  Over the Counter and prescriptions</li>
<li>Clinics &#8211; wellness and specific insights</li>
<li>Hospitals &#8211; wellness and specific insights</li>
<li>Health Consultants &#8211; Wellness and perspective</li>
<li>The Government &#8211; FDA, USDA, NIH, CDC, etc.</li>
<li>The World Wide Web &#8211; you name it!  Just watch the source.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Does this list look familiar?</strong></p>
<p>It should because you visit them now.  It is a simple matter or viewing them as a service provider <span style="text-decoration: underline;">and</span> an intellectual resource.  Ask them questions!</p>
<p>Select and use them like you would any other professional.  How hard is that?</p>

<p> <strong>The answer is:</strong>  While the issue of being overweight and obese receives plenty of lip service, the facts show the problem is worsening.</p>
<p> Perhaps these commentaries are adding to the cacophony.  But, if the few of you, who are willing to take this information to heart, take action the project has value.</p>
<p> Frankly, why anyone could possibly confuse fast, convenient and packaged products, masquerading as food, with the “real stuff” is mystifying. </p>
<p> Also, these commentaries were intended to dispel the amorphous picture of health that has been concocted by advertisers to sell products.  Health is not an emaciated person cavorting on the beach; nor the slogan “Big is beautiful.”  <strong>Health is arising to greet the day – not dreading the hours you’re awake.</strong></p>
<p>The situation is bad enough when people choose, knowingly or unknowingly, to commit dietary suicide – but, when they condemn their children to shorter lives, with more suffering, it must change.</p>
<p> And, don’t confuse these writings with some projection of gloom and doom &#8211; or worse yet, a call for action from a governmental agency – <strong>they are a plea to your better senses.</strong></p>
<p> Please, stop teaching your children your bad dietary habits and, if you can, change your ways, too.  It is easier to lead by example than to brow beat your kids into eating something you don’t eat.</p>
<p> Time is the great equalizer.  When you begin dreading the hours, you can’t say you weren’t advised.</p>

<p><strong>This dilemma is complicated</strong> by insurance co pay, Doctor participation, appointments, travel time, Physician specialization, Physician referrals, treatment protocols, sick time from work and a myriad of other frustrating details that make up the health care paradigm.</p>
<p><strong>What if  …</strong> the whole dilemma is a straw man?<br />
A false dilemma concocted to direct your attention toward one particular option – away from another.</p>
<p><em>Do you want the red one or the blue one?<br />
</em>Every salesman recognizes this questioning technique.  The purpose is to focus a prospective buyer’s attention on one particular issue when other options could be considered.</p>
<p><em>The blue one is prettier</em>.  Ka &#8211; Ching!</p>
<p><strong>What if …</strong> you would stop worrying about the color of the car?<br />
<strong>What if …</strong> all of the details of your health care are false dilemmas that disguise another option?</p>

<p> Books, magazines, infomercials, talk shows, television ads, radio ads, newspaper ad feature experts dissecting real and imaginary health concerns that “every American should know about.”  Media advertisers are bombarding you with sound bites or glossy pages for: prescriptive medicine, natural advances and smiling faces extolling near miraculous additions to everyday food.</p>
<p><strong> Is it any wonder that this torrent of minutia has you confused?</strong></p>
<p> Your challenge is to remove yourself from this quagmire of irrelevance and come face-to-face with this warning about your health that is similar to a sign you often see in antique stores, “<em><strong>You break it – you bought it</strong></em>.”  Your motto, concerning your health, should be:  “<strong><em>It is easier to stay healthy than to become healthy</em></strong>.”</p>
<p> Certainly, you need to consider the possibility of the “bad luck” of an unforeseen accident or a particularly virulent infective agent, but, if you manage the factors that you can control, it is more likely that you will enjoy the benefits of being healthy.</p>
<p> Personally, I cover the known deficiencies that exist in my, and everyone’s, diet – <a title="Everyone needs them - no one gets them" href="http://nupro.net/store/products.asp?cat=pH+Balancing+%2D+Phase+1&amp;partner=nno" target="_self">the essentials for wellbeing</a>.  Next, I filter my choices through a question that I ask myself before I choose to do something:  “Will my body thank me for this later?”  When the answer is yes, more often than not, I know I am contributing to my wellbeing.  If the answer is no, I use a <a title="What is a nutraceutical supplement?" href="http://nupro.net/store/whatisanutraceutical.asp?partner=nno" target="_self">nutraceutical supplement </a>that is formulated with combinations of complementary, natural ingredients, intended for a particular purpose, to fill the gap left by my choices.</p>

<p>In 2006, The American Holistic Medical Association, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Guide To Holistic Health</span> reports:  “There are an estimated 80,000 chemicals regularly in use today, with an additional 1,000 to 2,000 chemicals added to this list each year.  Only 3 percent of them have been tested to determine whether they are toxic or carcinogenic.  In 1998, the United states released approximately 500 billion tons of toxic chemicals into the environment.”</p>
<p> People shower or bathe everyday to keep the outside of their bodies clean.  It is the healthy thing to do.  What about the inside?  The “stuff” in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat builds up over time.  <a title="Why are you storing all that stuff?" href="http://nupro.net/store/proddetail.asp?prod=000rph1&amp;partner=nno" target="_self">Keeping the inside of your body as clean as the outside pays dividends</a>.</p>
<p><strong> Take responsibility.</strong></p>
<p><a title="or pay to be sick." href="http://nupro.net/store/healthbudget.asp?partner=nno" target="_self">Invest in your health</a>.  You have the most to lose if your health is compromised.  Stop expecting that someone or some magical machine; thing or plant will fix what you have broken.  It is your body that maintains your health using the nutrients derived from the things you put in your mouth.  Ask the question:  “Will my body thank me for this later?” </p>
<p> <strong>Do the best you can.</strong></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>One of the first lessons I learned</strong>, once I began earning a paycheck, <strong>was the importance of a budget</strong>.  My mother, who was my unofficial financial planner, showed me the “envelope trick.”</p>
<p>Mother patiently showed me how to identify my expenses, label an envelope for each expense, divide my money between each expense and put it in the appropriate envelope.  She explained that when the expense came due, the money would be “tucked” away.  All I needed to do is take the money out of the envelope to pay the bill.</p>
<p>And, my mother explained, once my expenses were provided for, I needed to prioritize any remaining money between needs, wants and building a nest egg; then make choices. </p>
<p>Choices like: wanting to go to the movies to have fun or needing to maintain my car.  Mother pointed out that the car would need tires, the oil changed and repairs; all of which, if not tended, would affect my ability to earn money.  The choice, and the consequence, would be mine.</p>

<p>It was like hearing Aesop’s fable about the grasshopper and the ants.  The grasshopper whiled away the summer – the ants worked to store away food for winter.  When, inevitably, winter came, the grasshopper starved and died – the ants did not.  The grasshoppler failed to budget.  <strong>The moral of Aesop’s fable is:  <em>It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.</em></strong> </p>
