			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong> </strong>The evidence of the connection between being overweight or obese and: Diabetes, Heart Attack, Stroke, Arthritis, sleep disturbance, breathing, premature death and, yes, Cancer is overwhelming.</p>
<p> Likewise, the connection between maintaining your healthy weight and consuming a wholesome diet, drinking water, moderate daily exercise and adequate, restful sleep is irrefutable. </p>
<p><strong> Weight Issues are a Symptom</strong></p>
<p>That’s right, the weight, bulges and girth that define you, are your body’s way of compensating for a deficiency in one, two, three or all four of the conditions necessary to maintain your healthy weight.</p>
<p><strong> The Problem is Habits and Addictions not Willpower</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/12934360/ns/today-today_health/t/addicted-food-how-break-your-habit/">Addicted to Food?  How to Break Your Habit</a> (Daryn Eller Prevention Magazine, TODAY) discusses, in length, the controversy surrounding manufactured food.  “… &#8220;<strong>we live in an environment perfectly designed to nurture food addictions</strong>.”</p>
<p> “<strong>For decades, food-industry scientists have been working hard to figure out how better to hook people</strong>”, claims David L. Katz, MD, MPH, director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center in Derby, CT, and author of <em>The Flavor Point Diet</em>. “Manufacturers now excel at hitting the sweet spot — making us crave more and more of a food.</p>
<p> In a supermarket recently, I actually found a <strong>pasta sauce that, serving for serving, contained more sugar than a chocolate</strong> fudge sauce, though the sweetness was hidden because the pasta sauce was so salty,” Katz says.  “The question is, why would anybody pour a packet of sugar over their pasta?</p>
<p> And the answer is that if you get used to that much sugar, another pasta sauce will taste too bland. The food industry wants us to need more and more of the substance to feel satisfied, so we&#8217;ll go out and buy more and more of it.”</p>
<p> “ … <strong>Animal research at Princeton University has also shown that the way you indulge may have consequences</strong>. Bart Hoebel, PhD, a professor of psychology, placed rats on an alternating schedule of 12 hours with no food, followed by 12 hours of access to both rat chow and a solution of 10% sugar (about as sweet as a soft drink) — a pattern that results in binge eating.  As the days went by, the rats began upping their intake of the sugar solution, drinking more and more at a time.</p>
<p> Hoebel found that after about a month, the rats&#8217; brains were producing surges of dopamine during their binges. “<strong>In rats, binge eating promotes addiction just like binge drinking promotes alcohol addiction</strong>,” says Hoebel. “It&#8217;s possible that repeatedly bingeing on sweets could actually change the circuitry of your brain” — and make you want ever-increasing amounts.”</p>
<p> When Hypcorates said “<em>Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food</em>” 2,500 years ago, it is unlikely he considered the lengths that Manufactured Food Companies would go to” build brand loyalty”.</p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>People Are Digging Their Graves With Their Forks</strong></p>
<p>… and setting themselves up to suffer mightily before they meet their maker – and they don’t even know it.</p>
<p><strong>Plus, they are setting their spouses and children up for heart ache and financial ruin.</strong></p>
<p> The number of books, articles and seminars designed to help people “<em>feel OK</em>” about their weight is staggering.  They’re right about one thing, “<em>What others think about you doesn’t matter, just feel good about yourself</em>.”</p>
<p>What they fail to point out the <strong>profound selfishness in the choice to subject your loved ones to the grief and financial implications of this predictable outcome</strong> – <strong>prolonged suffering, profound medical intervention and premature death</strong> &#8211; when people fail to manage their weight.</p>
<p> <strong>The Truth Hurts</strong></p>
<p>If this view is too harsh, then ignore it.</p>
<p><strong>Just know this</strong>:  Everyday, people ask themselves or a loved one, “<em>Why me?</em>”, when they are diagnosed with Cancer or Diabetes, experience a heart attack, a stroke or suffer some incurable set of symtoms that destroy their finances and quality of life.</p>
<p> There is a old saying, “<em>When you find your self in a hole, stop digging</em>.”, that sums up this commentary nicely. </p>
<p> Breaking the addictions that are turning you into a statistic is hard, but the reward are great.  In the end, it is your life, it is your choice.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Our daily newspaper, <a href="http://www.denverpost.com/opinion/ci_15578885">The Denver Post</a>, is reporting that Colorado is the least obese State in the Union.</p>
<p>Hooray for us!</p>
<p> But, if you read the article, Colorado’s obesity rate has doubled since 1995.  And, its top ranking rate of obesity is 19% compared to the national average of 25%.</p>
<p>Well, whoop-de-doo!</p>
<p><strong> 49 States Are Worse</strong></p>
<p> They’re not talking just about the people who are morbidly obese (they’re the moo-moo people who need help &#8211; immediately).  They’re talking about 15 to 20 lbs.  Take a look around you the next time you’re shopping, it is amazing what you will see!</p>
<p> And, while you’re at it, take a look at your own reflection in the window or a mirror.  Better yet, look at yourself in your mirror at home – without clothes.  What do you think of that?  How many clothes have you stored away in your archival closet waiting for the time when they will fit again?</p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>What <span style="text-decoration: underline;">is</span> the matter with you people?  </strong></p>
<p> The time is past for being politically correct, or for that matter, sensitive.  It is time for tough love!  Forget the fact that your cloths don’t fit and you look unhealthy &#8211; focus on the fact that you <span style="text-decoration: underline;">are</span> unhealthy. </p>
<p> <strong>We have written extensively</strong> about the health risks associated with being obese.</p>
<ul>
<li> Cancer, stroke, heart attack, arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes are just a few of the things you have to look forward to if you maintain your current state of being overweight.</li>
<li> We’ve dedicated more time writing about being overweight on the <a href="http://americanutra.com/category/metabolism-supports-weight-loss/">Americanutra blog</a>, and <a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/nutraceuticalpress.asp#weight">in articles on the NUPRO website</a>, than it’s worth.  If you can’t find inspiration in them, then all is lost.</li>
<li> Federal and State governments are considering, and in some cases passing, laws to protect you from yourselves forcing restaurants to post nutritional fact, that  few people will read and, in some cases,  banning certain cooking ingredients that are in foods people know are fattening.</li>
<li>Even more frightening than that, these same bureaucrats are considering empowering Child Protective Services to remove overweight children from their homes!</li>
</ul>
<p><strong> You Do Not Have Big Bones</strong></p>
<p> <a href="http://www.everydayhealth.com/weight/0623/chips-fries-soda-most-to-blame-for-long-term-weight-gain.aspx?xid=aol_eh-news_6-_20110620&amp;aolcat=hlt&amp;icid=main%7Chtmlws-sb-n%7Cdl6%7Csec1_lnk3%7C216826">This study</a> clearly point out your problem – you’re suffering from<a href="http://nupro.net/store/handtomouthdisease.asp"> hand to mouth disease</a>.</p>
<ul>
<li>Stop eating the crap that is making you fat. </li>
<li>And, stop feeding it to your kids, too!</li>
<li>If you think there is some potion, lotion or pill that will magically make you thin &#8211; you’re delusional!</li>
</ul>
<p> We can help you overcome the habits that have, or will, put you in this predicament, but if you don’t stop sitting around and don’t stop putting chips, sweets, soft drinks and fast food in your mouth, you can’t change anything.  And, the same goes for your kids.</p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>No more excuses, delusion and, no more whining.</strong></p>
<p> Studies repeatedly show that people are far more critical of other people than they are of themselves.  <a href="http://www.movement.livewellcolorado.org/">Live Well Colorado</a> is conducting a project on that very subject – helping people with an honest self-evaluation. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Judging by your comments, some of you are taking umbrage with our analysis of the weight loss sector.  In retrospect, we should have kept the analysis to ourselves.  But then, those of you who are interested wouldn’t have the perspective that the analysis provides.</p>
<p><strong>The long and short of our analysis of weight loss products shows that the historic approaches to weight loss delivers short-term benefits.</strong>  But, once the: stimulants, fat blockers, carb blockers, starvation diets, specialty diets, special packaged foods or strenuous exercise stops, people regain weight.</p>
<p><strong>Some time ago, we prepared a paper titled:  “<a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/Todayschoices.asp">Today’s Choices are Tomorrow’s Consequences</a>”.  </strong>In it, we made the point that the dietary choices people are making, everyday, contribute to either declining health or reliable health. </p>
<p>Choosing fast, processed and preserved food is a choice, made knowingly or unknowingly, to accept the prospects of declining health.</p>
<p>Further, we suggested that people could reduce the likelihood of enduring the symptoms of declining health by choosing whole, fresh food more often and filling the gap with supplements.</p>
<p><strong>Next, we prepared a paper titled:  “<a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/handtomouthdisease.asp">The Missing Diagnosis</a>”.</strong>  In it, we made the point that many of the discomforts of declining health can be attributed to one diagnosis:  Hand to Mouth Disease.</p>
<p>Frankly, I can only empathize with those of you who are experiencing declining health, because I am healthy.  I make the choice, everyday to invest in health.</p>
<p>I chose to consume foods and beverages that feed my body rather than those that challenge my body.  And, I use supplements to fill the gaps brought on by choosing to eat cooked foods (I take enzymes) and live in Colorado where fresh fruits and vegetables aren’t grown year-round. (I take trace minerals, red and green phytonutrients).</p>
<p><strong>We prepared a paper title:  “<a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/self-care.asp">Invest in Health or Pay to be Sick</a>” to describe the logic involved in making a decision </strong>like the choice I make to care for my body.</p>
<p>The point is:  dealing with being overweight or obese is not like dealing with an occasional headache.  <strong>You can’t take a pill and make it go away</strong>.  Gaining weight, from our perspective, is one of the symptoms of declining health brought on by dietary choices that culminate in metabolic dysfunction, malnutrition, constipation and addiction to foods with a high glycemic load.</p>
<p><strong>Being overweight is a symptom</strong>.  <a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/sickcarevshealthcare.asp">It is a predictor</a> &#8211; that you will experience other symptoms, in future years, that are the consequences of you choices.</p>
<p>Some years ago, we presented a paper, <a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/healthypeopledontgetsick.asp">Healthy People Don’t Get Sick</a>.  It is as true today as the day we presented the paper.  While you should read this paper, the summary is:  if you treat you body with respect, it will return the favor. </p>
<p><strong>There are 4 Simple Truths that everyone should know about staying healthy.</strong>  Rather than outlining the subject, you can read them for yourself.   The <a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/managinghealthandhealing.asp">4 Simple Truths</a> demystifies the issues surrounding what you need to do to protect your health.</p>
<p>Another report:  “<a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/caringforyourbody.asp">Caring for Your Body</a>”, strips away the scientific jargon to examine, in plain English, the simple elegance of the functioning of the body.  But, it is only applicable once you examine and discard the <a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/epidemicofchronicdisease.asp">myths that are contributing to declining health</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Back to Weight Loss …</strong></p>
<p>A good guess is that most of you are malnourished from eating too many “quickie” meals and over-stimulated at work and home.  Why throw more wood on the fire?</p>
<p><strong>All of the attempts to deal with weight gain fail to deliver</strong>, in the long run, because they fail to account for the cause – habits.  The false paradigms the allow people to believe they can ignore the needs of their bodies and still stay healthy; that someone, or something, can fix what they have broken.</p>
<p><strong>When you stop treating weight gain and obesity as a disease, </strong>and recognize that it is a sign of declining health, which is a symptom of Hand to Mouth Disease, the prospects for meaningful long-term weight management improve dramatically.</p>
<p><strong>The choice is yours</strong>.  If you continue to abuse the resiliency of the human body, it will, sooner or later, fail to bounce back from your abuse.</p>

<p>You have a lot to see, and to consider, if you’re trying to get information about losing weight from the web.</p>
<p> <strong>With all those options, it is no wonder people are confused.</strong></p>
<p> Earlier this year, we went through an intensive analysis before we decided to re enter the weight loss supplement market.  The analysis was insightful and, surprisingly similar to the analysis we concluded in 1990.</p>
<p> You may find the analysis interesting, and it may help you make sense out of all the “stuff”, on the web, about weight loss.</p>
<p> <strong>Here is an overview of our analysis of the weight loss options we investigated.</strong></p>
<p> There are several options available to assist people during the weight loss process in the market today. </p>
<p>They are:</p>
<p><strong> Eat less – Exercise More</strong></p>
<p>Certainly, there is nothing new here.  Logic dictates that this approach should work, but, in most cases, it doesn’t!</p>
<p> In fact, it may contribute to the difficulties for long-term weight management.</p>
<p> In the world of metabolism, the body views less food, with more exercise, as a famine.  It responds by turning down Basal Metabolic Rate (the metabolism that is responsible for burning 70% of you calories, everyday) to conserve energy expenditure.  When the famine continues, the body begins to use the protein, in tissue, as a source of BMR energy (ketosis) to conserve the ready source of energy in fat for emergencies.</p>
<p> Once the calorie restriction stops, BMR may, or may not, reset to its healthy “burn rate”.  The individual, whose BMR fails to reset, soon gains the lost weight back – and often more!  Thus begins the cycle that is the phenomenon referred to as the YO-YO effect.</p>
<p><strong> Fat Blocker Dietary Supplements</strong></p>
<p>This category of supplements for weight loss, espouse another concept that seems to make sense.  The theory goes:  if you stop fat from leaving your digestive system, you can stop the fat from accumulating around the body.</p>
<p> You need to know that calories are a measure of the energy value of food:  Protein offers 4 calories/gram, Carbohydrates – 4 calories/gram, Fat &#8211; 9 calories/gram. (For most of us, a gram is approximately 3.5 ounces.)</p>
<p> Back to the world of metabolism, fat is a critical part of energy production.  The engine that sparks metabolism (mitochondria) burns water, glucose (sugar) and fat to produce energy.   Stored fat requires more internal activity than dietary fat, which slows down the production of energy at the cellular level.</p>
<p> The issue boils down to the good fat &#8211; bad fat dilemma.  Indiscriminately blocking fat may not be such a good thing for supporting healthy metabolism.</p>
<p> <strong>Carbohydrate Blocker Dietary Supplements  </strong>(Recently, this category has been recast as a sugar blocker)</p>
<p>To understand the theory of carb blocking, you need to know that all carbohydrates are rendered into glucose in your digestive system and that glucose is the primary energy-producing component of metabolism.</p>
<p> There are two types of dietary carbohydrates, categorized by how quickly the body converts them into glucose:  Simple and Complex.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Simple Carbohydrates</strong> are converted very quickly into glucose.  They are generally white:  flour, starchy grain (white rice), milk (and things made from milk), sugar, fruit juice and starchy tubers (things that grow underground).</li>
<li><strong>Complex Carbohydrates</strong> require more digestion, and, therefore, the glucose “trickles” into the metabolic process.  They are typically whole foods:  grains, fresh vegetables (that grow above the ground) and fresh fruit.</li>
</ol>
<p> While both types of carbohydrates have the same caloric value, 4 calories/gram, <a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/sugar.asp">the impact is vastly different</a>.  An easy way to understand the difference is:  <strong>simple carbohydrates “explode”</strong> into the metabolic process while <strong>complex carbohydrates are “metered” in</strong>.</p>
<p> The best analogy is to view the process like the way gas is metered into a car’s engine.  Too much fuel, too soon, the engine will flood.  In the case of glucose, the body works hard to avoid “flooding out”.</p>
<p> The issue boils down to a good carb – bad carb dilemma.  Like fat blockers, blocking the source of glucose, the primary source for energy, will affect healthy metabolism.</p>
<p><strong>Stimulants</strong></p>
<p>Natural stimulants, like caffeine, are common and widely used in weight loss supplements.  Their theory is: stimulating the adrenal system, with a natural stimulant, will increase caloric demand thereby increasing the burning of stored fat to accommodate that demand.</p>
<p> The issue boils down to one question:  “How much is too much.”  A typical consumer ingests lots of caffeine:  coffee, tea, soda, and now, energy drinks.  Besides caffeine, sugar, contained in these various beverages, in processed and fast food and in juices, is stimulating the adrenal system.</p>
<p> Add stress, at work, home and the background stress created by worrying about economic issues, friends, etc, the adrenal system is at a tipping point as it is.  Adding more pressure on the adrenal system, without supporting it, might carry the process too far.</p>
<p> In fact, one of the most likely new supplement categories will be adrenal dysfunction.  Research is surfacing that suggests that modern lifestyle choices may already be taxing the adrenal system.  As a result, NUPRO is evaluating historical uses of herbs, various current findings to access the possible application of a natural supplement, or system, to address the issue.</p>
<p><strong> Other Approaches</strong></p>
<p>As one would expect, from an issue that impacts so many people, there is a plethora of choices.  <strong>Strenuous exercise</strong> tops the list, followed closely by <strong>weigh-in clubs,</strong> <strong>clubs with mail order “healthy food portions”</strong>, <strong>Clinics</strong> offering injections, <strong>hypnosis</strong> and <strong>bariatric surgery </strong>that seeks to restrict, or remodel the digestive tract to disrupt the absorption of nutrients.</p>
<p> On the main, the options in this category are expensive, and due to the radical life style changes they require, provide a possible short term benefit that diminishes once the participant can no longer afford the time or expense or lacks the discipline to proceed.</p>
<p> <strong>Judging by the almost epidemic state of being overweight or being obese, these approaches may not be  working quite as well as one would expect.  The weight management issue is big &#8230; and growing.  There is ample opportunity if &#8230; .</strong></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p> It appears a nerve has been struck in the “exercise more” weight loss camp.</p>
<p> Well … take it easy on me big fellas!</p>
<p> If gym exercising is your deal, more power to you.  If you find solace in your time in the gym, or however you choose to “sweat”, knock yourself out!  If others choose to join you, more power to them, too.</p>
<p>But, you need to know that <strong>many of us don’t share your enthusiasm</strong>.</p>
<p>Gym exercise is not my thing.  My exercise of choice is riding horses.  For me, the experience is physical, mental and, because I compete in events with other like-minded people, social.  I particularly enjoy the therapeutic qualities of the partnership with my highly athletic partners – my quarter horses.</p>
<p><strong>While there is a multitude of ways to manage weight – all of them must involve 3 things</strong>:</p>
<ol>
<li>Better diet</li>
<li>Exercise that fits your schedule, ability and proclivity</li>
<li>Lifestyle choices including: sleep, rest and stress management</li>
</ol>
<p> When people have lost, or are losing, their ability to control their weight, one, two or all three of these components conspire to layer on the unwanted pounds and put their health at risk.</p>
<p> The issue can be viewed as a balanced mathematical equation: <strong> Diet + Moderate Exercise + Lifestyle = Healthy.</strong></p>
<p><strong>When</strong> any one, two or all of the pieces of <strong>the left side of the equation is out of balance, the result is “not healthy”.</strong></p>
<p> Of course you’ve heard or seen this before, because it is <strong>an unshakable truth with a predictable outcome.</strong></p>
<p><strong>That truth is:  the body will begin to decay when the health equation is out of balance</strong>.  <strong> The <a href="http://www.nupro.net/store/delvalle1.asp">symptoms of decay</a>, and the path they take, are predictable, too.</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>At first, it is weight gain</li>
<li>Followed by self-medicating with stimulants like caffeine and/or mood enhancers like comfort food and/or alcohol;</li>

<li>Followed by prescriptions for a condition that can’t be resolved – only managed;</li>
<li>Followed by a search for the “magic bullet”</li>

<p><strong> Of course, there’s always the issue of bad luck to consider.</strong></p>

<p> Personally, I believe that <strong>weight gain is a sign of decaying health</strong>; that this particular sign, weight gain, is brought on by disregarding the health-equation. </p>

<p><strong><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;">A fair question would be “Why?”</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;">The answers lie in two areas: </span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">lifestyle </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">the paradigms that seem to regulate the choices all people make, on a daily basis.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;">No one will argue that <strong>the modern lifestyle is significantly different than your grandparents </strong>or your great grandparents, depending on your age.  There are dramatic changes in diet, k-12 education (and beyond), the type and expectations of employment, family, childrearing and healthcare, to name just a few.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;"><strong>Daily commuting is </strong>… a challenge … and a great source of frustration for almost everyone.  So, everyone’s day starts and ends with a bang!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;">Regardless of you career choice, blue collar or white, <strong>each work day is packed with demands </strong>that, as we’ve come to accept, require sacrifices such as working late and weekends to achieve those work related demands using <strong>technology that limits or, in some cases, eliminates physical effort </strong>to accomplish the task.</span></p>

<p><strong><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></strong><span style="font-size: small;"><strong>Two income families are the norm</strong>.  Even if you’ve chosen to raise your children with one parent staying at home, your children’s school and extra-curricular activities create <strong>a schedule that is challenging </strong>or, if you have more than one child, very demanding.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;">In fact, the only difference between travelers and those who stay near their home is the venue.</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;"><strong>Ask yourself this question</strong>:  “When was the last time you sat down, with your family, for a home cooked meal?”  And, when you did, try to recall how much of the food, on your table, came from some sort of package.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;">My guess:  everything but the meat.</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;">The components of being overweight or obese, and declining health, can be broken down into two dominant categories:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;">Physiological:  including body metabolism, hormones and the neurological components of regulating appetite and cravings.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Environmental:  including the abundance of convenience, package and fast high calorie foods, the prevalence of an increasingly sedentary lifestyle due to the changes in the technologies and expectations of work.</span></li>
</ul>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Losing weight is the #1 priority on most people’s list, and rightly so.</p>
<p> The reason for its high rating is simple to understand if you will pause, during your next trip to the mall, to see what excess weight is doing to people.</p>
<p> Recently, I had occasion to travel by air.  The trip involved three airports for both ends of the trip with, of course, layovers.   That was an eye-opener, too! </p>
<p>There were 4 obvious groups of people:</p>
<ol>
<li>Twenty somethings</li>
<li>Thirty somethings</li>
<li>Forty somethings</li>
<li>Fifty plus somethings.</li>
</ol>
<p> The difference in appearance was, for lack of a better word, astounding.  And, the obvious change, during the transition between demographics was … well, mind-boggling.</p>
<p> While waiting for each next plane, my observations were:</p>
<p><strong> 1.  The twenty somethings were, for the most part, thin, energetic and they appeared to be healthy.</strong></p>
<p>They were constantly skipping between their “mobile devices” and laptops.  The excitement of their first job, the anticipation of the experiences of travel, new places, new people and few, if any responsibilities at home was obvious. </p>
<p>To summarize, it appeared to be a low stress – high expectation experience for them.</p>
<p><strong> 2.  The thirty somethings were beginning to show a little wear.</strong></p>
<p>They were sporting a few extra pounds, had less bounce in each step and they appeared less healthy. </p>
<p>The men’s hair and skin pallor had less radiance.  The women wore more makeup so, thanks to personal care products, it wasn’t as apparent. </p>
<p>Their use of  “mobile devices” and laptops was more deliberate with what appeared to be longer, less animated conversations and sessions on their mobile devices and laptop.</p>
<p>The responsibilities, and demands, of their job, the past experiences of travel; places, people and the responsibilities at home, like: spouses, young children and a mortgage was obvious.</p>
<p>To summarize, stress was taking its toll on them.</p>
<p><strong> 3.  The forty somethings looked unhealthy.</strong></p>
<p>They were, for the most part, clinically obese.  Men and women alike were overhanging their belts or covering their bodies with loose fitting clothes.</p>
<p>Without trying to be unkind, it was obvious that they were attempting to reverse the trend that they witnessed in the mirror, everyday, with attire and overdone makeup.</p>
<p>The demands, and stress, of their corporate career are all too familiar.  Thick files extracted from a briefcase, reviewing reports on the laptop, putting out fires on the cell, preparing for a meeting that your boss or your people are “depending on you to pull off”, petulant teenagers, an understanding and overworked spouse, too many restaurant meals, too many bad airport meals, hotel rooms … .  Ick!  But, I digress.</p>
<p>To summarize, the stress, while mostly managed, is monumental.  It’s no wonder that they were diving into their briefcase for antacids, some sort of over-the-counter medication or their prescription because, the past abuses to their bodies is beginning to catch up with them.</p>
<p><strong>4.   The fifty plus somethings broke into 2 groups:  those sitting in 1st class and those sitting where I sat.</strong></p>
<p>Those sitting in 1st class were either incredibly lucky or they have more time, and money, to pay attention to their health &#8230; because the people who joined me appeared to be not healthy.</p>
<p>The people sitting with me, for the most part, looked like the time they spent neglecting their health had caught up with them.  I seem to remember reading that the average 60-year-old person is taking 6 prescriptions to manage the symptoms of their degenerating conditions of health. </p>
<p>To summarize, it wasn’t that pretty!</p>
<p><strong> You’re probably asking yourself:  “What does this has to do with being overweight or obese?”</strong></p>
<p> The situation started back when you were a late twenty something &#8211; when you thought you could continue to eat like a teenager &#8211; when you first encountered the rigors of living a life of responsibilities.</p>
<p><strong>It happened when those 2 to 5 pounds you gained during the holidays and winter, didn’t “just go away.”</strong> </p>
<p>You may have tried something that was quick and easy.   But now, sure enough, you find yourself carrying around several years worth of … well, you know &#8230; those pounds that didn&#8217;t go away.</p>
<p><strong> Losing weight is likely the most promised, and subsequently broken, New Year’s resolution in the world. </strong></p>
<p>As previously written, <a href="http://www.americanutra.com/trying-to-lose-weight-in-january-is-a-fool%e2%80%99s-mission/">trying to lose weight during winter is a fool’s mission</a>.  Adding to this unavoidable fact, unrealistic expectations from: starvation diets, expensive, time consuming workouts at the gym or “fast-acting diet pills” will soon have you right back where you were – only, you&#8217;ll be lighter in your wallet and disappointed.</p>
<p> <strong>The good news is:  spring is just around the corner and, that’s when you should start your weight loss program.</strong></p>
<p> I believe the most effective way to burn fat is to restore metabolism while you’re awake and during sleep.  (That’s how you burned away the pounds when you were 20 something). </p>

<p> I, too, have been moved to make resolutions, occasionally, over the years.  For me, successful resolutions have always been practical and accomplished with simple changes in my daily routines. </p>
<p><strong>Less complicated resolutions have met with greater success.</strong></p>
<p> <strong>As it happens, we are creatures of habit.</strong>  For example, most people, who actually prepare meals, rely on the same 7 recipes, often preparing them on the same day.  I’m sure you’ve done it, too.  When I was a boy, you could set the calendar by what my mother served for supper.  “If it’s Wednesday, it’s chicken.”</p>

<p> <strong>Habits are the fount of all resolutions.</strong>  They are the admission that something, that you are doing, is producing an unwanted outcome and it needs to be changed.</p>
<p><strong> Such is often the case when people resolve to lose weight.</strong></p>
<p> People have watched their bodies grow past their wardrobe and have, therefore, resolved to shrink back to fitting into their clothes.</p>
<ul>
<li> “I resolve to eat less” means you plan to starve yourself to lose weight.</li>
<li>“I resolve to exercise more” means you have time in your schedule to go to the gym for an hour every other day to lose weight.</li>
<li>“I resolve to eat better” means you will wake up 30 minutes sooner to prepare breakfast and abandon you lunch time haunts.</li>
</ul>
<p> If you can find the time, discipline or courage to follow through with these types of resolutions then more power to you.  For me, these resolutions would be complicated and therefore, likely unsuccessful.</p>
<p><strong>The fact remains that most of you need to lose weight</strong>.  If you can muster up a virtue, patience, you just might be able to lose those extra pounds in time for spring – in a more practical manner.</p>
